Allen Hackett Obituary

Dateline-Boscobel
Veteran
Allen W. Hackett, age 97 of Boscobel, passed away Sunday July 3, 2022 at his home in
Crawford County, while spending the day with his family.  He was born April 26, 1925 in
Ferryville Wisconsin, the son of John and Rose (Rutter) Hackett.  He married Betty Jean
Lambrecht on June 3, 1950 at the Lutheran Church of St. Matthews in Eau Claire Wisconsin.
She preceded him in death on May 18, 2014.
Allen William Hackett (Al) was the first-born child of John William Hackett and Rose Elizabeth
Rutter Hackett. He came into the world on April 26, 1925 at the home of his grandmother, who
was a midwife. He would later be joined at home by two brothers and two sisters. His father,
John William Hackett, (Jack), was a farmer, a blacksmith, and a railroad worker; his mother
Rose Elizabeth Rutter Hackett was a homemaker and very active in the community. Allen was
born with farming in his blood and developed a life-long ethic of hard work starting as a child
with chores before and after school. It was during his childhood that he came to love and respect
nature, learned to hunt and fish, and developed a strong sense of family.
He attended grade school and junior high school in Ferryville. He was part of a singing group
and was also in the Boy Scouts. Al graduated from Lansing (Iowa) High School on May 28,
1942.
In March of 1944, shortly before his 19 th birthday, Al enlisted in the United States Navy where
he served honorably for just over two years at the end of World War II. Following the war, he
attended Vocational Agriculture classes, on the GI Bill.
On New Year’s Eve, 1948, Al met his future wife, Betty Lambrecht. They were engaged and
married in 1950 and moved to a farm in the Boscobel area in 1951. The two of them raised five
children. He began a “second” career as a bus driver and mechanic for the Boscobel School
District; he was promoted to bus garage manager and supervisor and retired at age 65. He was
blessed with grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he adored.
Al saw a lot of changes in the world during his 97 years of life and he took everything in stride.
He was a humble man, a good friend to many, a devoted husband and father, and a good
neighbor. He enjoyed simple pleasures – good food, gardening, good brandy, and most
importantly, family. He will be remembered for his quick wit, big heart and kindness.

He spent his final years at the Boscobel Care and Rehab Center where he was skillfully cared for
and developed many friendships. A staffer said, ‘(Al) was one of the sweetest men I’ve ever
met! We are going to miss him’.
He loved and was loved, leaving a great legacy.
He is survived by his four children, Carla (Doug) Rutherford of Boscobel, Susan Daniel of
Madison, Bill (Cheryl) Hackett of Boscobel, Dave Hackett of Stoughton; 13 grandchildren;16
great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is further survived by a sister, Lois
Finley of Kenosha; a brother-in-law, Bill Lambrecht of New York City; and a daughter-in-law,
Dixie Hackett of Darlington.  He was preceded in death by his parents, son Todd Hackett;
grandson Nathan Daniel; daughter-in-law, Lori Hackett; two brothers, Darrell Hackett and Keith
Hackett; and his sister, Phyllis Phalin.
