Clarence R. “Son/Sonny” Byers, 93, of rural Boscobel, WI, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the Boscobel Nursing Home. He was born on June 30, 1930, the son of Harold and Loreen (Raisler) Byers of Woodman, WI. He attended Boscobel High School, graduating in 1949. He was an active sportsman during high school, as a track distance runner, football player, and a boxer. Following high school, he worked for the Reynolds Construction Company, building bridges and other projects, and later became a farmer on Maple Ridge.
Clarence will be remembered as a quiet man, a true gentleman, an amazing uncle, and a man with a kind and generous heart. He also loved snowmobiling, hunting, and riding his four-wheeler on the farm. He loved nature and would roam the woods for berries, mushrooms, etc.
Beginning in October 1953, he proudly and faithfully served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was stationed at Camp Delmar and Camp Pendleton, CA, before being shipped to Korea. He was wounded twice in action, being awarded a Purple Heart and a purple Heart w/Gold Star. He was also awarded the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.
Clarence leaves behind his loving family of brothers and sisters, Katherine Flansburgh, Eleanor Friedli, Shirley Cornils, Harold Ivan “Bud” Byers, Kenneth Byers, Karon (Bob) Kuykendall and Kerry (Sharon) Byers, along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Loreen Byers, a sister Dorothy Bell, and a brother Douglas Byers.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at the Kendall Funeral Home, 209 Mary Street, Boscobel, WI. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at the Boscobel Cemetery.
The family invites everyone to join them for food and fellowship at the Tuffley Community Center, 104 East Oak Street, Boscobel, WI following the service.
