A life long Steuben, Wi. resident Francis Elaine “Schmitty” Schmitt passed away on May 6th 2022. She was born in Wausau on June 12, 1927.
She lived most of her life on a farm in Steuben, being raised by Kate, Tom and Bill Tucker.
She was a farm women who knew hard work both in and out of doors. She loved farming. She even named her cattle and their babies and opened her farm to many a stray animal.
She was a teacher for a good many years starting at Gardener (a one room school) on Niland Ridge. She taught in Oregon, Wi. then to Waterford, Wi. for 20 years. She then started teaching for the Prairie du Chien School district, teaching in Eastman, Wi. for 12 years, 6 of those as acting principal. She retired after 37 years of teaching.
She was a very prominent and well known Steubenite. She was on the Village Board for many years and worked selflessly for the community to improve the look and the feel of the town. She was big in organizing events such as the Steuben Fun Days and the Colorama to name a few. She was very generous in giving of her time, talents, knowledge, and hard work not only for Steuben but for the surrounding areas as well.
She was a devout Catholic and lived her faith in prayer and conviction.
Elaine is survived by sisters, Annette Ruether and Marie Kant, many nieces and nephews, especially Joe Bolwahn, Gary and Peggy Schmitt and Larry and Kathy Zeeh. And her special family Tim and Porsha Sander.
She was proceeded in death by Tom, Kate, and Bill Tucker. Her cherished friend Tubby (Beverly) Kelley, Sisters Cecelia Zeeh and Marie Bolwahn, her parents Edward and Martha (Scheffner) Schmitt, brothers, Milton, Winfield, George,Wilbur, and Jim.
A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday May 16, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Seneca. Father Tom Huff officiating. Burial in St. Patrick's Catholic Church Cemetery , Seneca. Friends may call on Monday May 16, 2022 from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service at 11:00 A.M. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Seneca. In lieu of flowers memorials can be given to Steuben First Responders, or a charity of your choice in Elaine's name. The Kendall Funeral Service in Boscobel is assisting the family.
