Frederick Waltz Obituary

Frederick E. "Fred" Waltz, 76, passed away peacefully at home on January 8, 2024, surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer. He was born on November 27, 1947, to the late Edward F. and Dorothy J. (Frey) Waltz. Fred's life was one of service, family, and enjoyment of simple pleasures. Fred's journey began in Boscobel, WI, where he attended the one-room Wisconsin Valley School. He graduated from Boscobel High School in 1965, leaving his mark as the school's first wrestling state- qualifier—an early indication of his determination and competitive spirit. After serving his country in the U.S. Army from 1969-1971, he returned to Boscobel and completed his degree from UW-Platteville in 1973. His post-service years were marked by his role as the American Legion Blake-Semrad Post 134 Adjutant. In his professional life, Fred was a well-respected businessman starting as the owner of his Surge dealership, and later with Sue A. Waltz State Farm Insurance. Fred was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served on The Boscobel Community Foundation board. He also volunteered as a Boscobel firefighter in his younger years. Fred's heart was always with his beloved family. He was a devoted husband to the late Sue A. (Mock) Waltz for 45 years, a loving father to Wendy S. Butler (Dennis) and Wade K. Waltz (Jessie), an adoring grandfather to Brenden F. Butler (Brianna), Margaret A. Butler, Emery E. Waltz, and Brielle M. Waltz, and a doting great-grandfather to Bennett L. Butler. His legacy is also carried on by his surviving siblings Sandy Scanlan, Pat Updike (Steve), Tom A. Waltz (Pam), Nancy Devlin (Mike), and Michelle Bender (Rich), and sister-in-law Sally Waltz (Steve Fritz), plus numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He held a special place in his heart for his uncle, Tom C. Waltz, a long-time co-worker and father figure. He is survived by his significant other, Kathy (Schiltz) Wallin, who brought additional love and companionship to his later years. Together they spent their time enjoying her three daughters, one son, ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Fred had a passion for the outdoors, especially fishing, and finding humor in every moment, poking fun at those he loved the most. He cherished his time on the family farm, at River of Lakes in Bagley WI, his visits to 'The Boat' with his buddies, and vacationing with his wife and friends. Fred's love for life was infectious, and he believed in the power of laughter and the strength of friendships, both old and new. Fred is preceded in death by his wife Sue, her parents Kenneth & Geraldine (Collop) Mock, his parents Ed & Dorothy Waltz, three siblings Judy Waltz, Ed Waltz Jr, and Ruth Copsey, brother-in-law Bernard Scanlan, and special Aunt Leila Waltz. Fred's life was a journey of laughter, family, and commitment, and though his physical presence is no longer with us, the memories he created and the lives he touched will forever remain. In Fred’s words, “Life is short. Git ‘er done.” A Celebration of Life, for Fred Waltz will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 1:00 P.M. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Boscobel.
