Gloria Boersma Obituary

Gloria Boersma, age 86, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 19, 2026 in Madison. She was born on October 17, 1939, daughter of the late Robert and Mildred (Poller) Staskal. Gloria was a woman of boundless energy and compassion throughout her life.  She led a full life defined by her dedication to others and the pursuit of her many passions.

Gloria developed many friendships during her life’s journey, growing up in Reedsburg, WI and Boscobel, WI, and then living in Madison, WI, St. Loius, MO, Excelsior, MN, Morganton, NC, and then back to her home state of WI.  Throughout her journey, she cultivated deep and lasting friendships wherever she resided. She was known for her kind heart and greeted everyone with a warm smile.

Gloria’s lifelong commitment to caring for others began at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, where she attended nursing school. This launched a distinguished 45-year career as a registered nurse, and she remained in close contact with her nursing school friends throughout her lifetime. She loved her profession deeply, providing comfort and care to countless patients.

Beyond her professional life, Gloria was a gifted musician and adored playing the piano. She shared her musical talents with her local church, her community, and played for special family occasions as well.  Her baby grand piano occupied a special place in her living room, despite the size. She played the piano beautifully and practiced daily until her recent move to assisted living. She enjoyed the local symphony in whatever city she resided in, especially Concerts on the Square in Madison.

Gloria was also an avid traveler, taking many adventurous and exciting trips throughout her lifetime. She hiked down the Grand Canyon, travelled to Egypt, ziplined in Costa Rica, and visited her foreign exchange student in Ireland. In addition, she had many special memories of trips with her nieces to Europe.  When Gloria wasn't traveling, she was navigating the complexities of the stock market, a hobby she followed with keen interest and sharp insight.  She also loved gardening, spending time with her pets, and reading.

Gloria believed in staying young at heart and body. She was an active member of various Bridge playing groups in both Morganton and Madison, and she was a formidable walker. Although she participated in many marathons throughout her lifetime, her family will never forget when she won the Fox Valley Full Marathon, for Women, Age 57, a race she completed alongside several family members.

Gloria cared immensely for her family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, caring for others, enjoyment of music, and a "can-do" spirit. She will be missed dearly by all those who knew and loved her.

Gloria is survived by her brother James (Kay) Staskal of Waunakee; nieces and nephews Cindy (Terry) Sanders-Schenck of Sister Bay, Sheila (Jamie) Adams of Waunakee, Sheryl (Scott) Hamilton of Waterford, WI, Scott (Kelly) Sanders of Madison, Megan (Kevin) Staskal-Bradt of St. Charles, IL, and Rene (Alan) Staskal of Cottage Grove, along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Donna Sanders, brother Jerry Staskal, and her first husband, Claire Corpian.

Gloria’s family would like to give a sincere thank you to the staff of both All Saint’s Neighborhood and Agrace Hospice Care in Madison.  The care, support, and friendship she received was exceptional and brought joy to her day.  Although there will be no formal visitation or funeral service, per Gloria’s request, those who wish to do so may make a donation in her name to one of the above organizations.  Gloria would be pleased to know that her memory is sparking an act of kindness.

Gloria will be laid to rest in the Boscobel Cemetery with a private graveside service. Online condolences can be offered at www.kendallfuneralservice.com.
