John L. Shimpach, age 82 of Boscobel, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2026 following a tragic motor vehicle accident. He was born in Boscobel on March 2, 1944, son of the late Archie and Syble (Childs) Shimpach. John married Mary Devlin, and they later divorced. He went on to marry Dominique Fitzgerald, and she preceded him in death on April 2, 2009. John married Deanna Freymiller in Boscobel on May 8, 2010, and they were blessed with nearly 16 years together.
John worked as a master plumber for many years. He was an avid fisherman who loved to spend time on the water. He treasured the times spent with family and friends catching walleyes, blue gills, and perch. Many of John’s happiest moments were with a fishing pole or deck of cards in his hands surrounded by his family and friends telling yet another story. His prankster personality either stole your heart or ticked you off because he caught you on one, but Lord don’t catch his name on the skunk board at Kimmie’s! He loved backroad drives in his Gator/UTV with Sassie on the backboard navigating for him.
In his later years, his greatest joy was teaching his grandbabies how to fish (wiggle, wiggle, jerk) and mushroom hunt with that special stick, all the while trying to convince them he could smell them. His love for gardening blossomed in the last few years, always trying a new technique for the next year. His smile and kindred spirit will be deeply missed at each card game, fishing trip, and family and friend gathering. No fish fry will ever be the same without him in the kitchen. He was a gift to all of us, but he has now been called home to be the entertainer. Rest in Peace John, but keep cheering on the Packers.
He is survived by his wife Deanna Shimpach of Boscobel, sons John Shimpach of Portage, David (Julie) Shimpach of Lodi, Randy Shimpach of Madison, Casey (Dana) Fritz of Boscobel, and Corey (Lisa) Fritz of Boscobel; sister Joyce Weadge of Blue River, 9 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. John was preceded in death by his wife Dominique Shimpach, brothers Jerry and Arby Shimpach, sister Joann Weadge, and his parents.
A memorial service for John will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, May 17, 2026 at Memories on Maple, 5948 Maple Lane, Boscobel with Rev. Lance Wetter officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Boscobel Rescue Squad, Crawford County Ridge Runners, or Mt. Hope Methodist Church are appreciated. Online condolences can be offered at www.kendallfuneralservice.com.
