Katherine "Kate" Flansburgh Obituary

Katherine Maude “Kate” Flansburgh, age 99 of Boscobel, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 26, 2025 with her family by her side. She was born on January 16, 1926 in Woodman to the late Harold and Loreen (Raisler) Byers. Kate married Avery Flansburgh on January 1, 1950 in Boscobel, and they were blessed with 43 years of marriage until his passing in 1993. Kate and her late husband, Avery farmed for many years in Marietta Township, raising registered Holsteins. Kate also worked part-time throughout the years at the Boscobel State Nursery, now known as the Wilson State Nursery as well as the apple orchards in Gays Mills. She later took a job at the famous Manhattan Club outside of Boscobel as a dish washer and salad girl. Kate’s love for cooking delicious meals came in handy there and became one of the cooks at the Manhattan while working there for 19 years. She gave up cooking when she was elected as the treasurer for the township of Marietta, and she held that position until she retired.

Kate loved to cook! She was well known for her awesome potato salad and pies. She could take a little of this and a little of that and the meal was absolutely delicious. A person never left her table hungry, but if you did, it was your own fault. You could find Kate every holiday or special occasion in the kitchen cooking and baking a mouth-watering meal, as well as everybody’s favorite pie to go with it. If you dropped a hint that an apple, pumpkin, cherry, berry, custard, or cream pie sure would taste good, you could expect a call to stop by because she had baked that day. Over the years she donated pies for bake sales, benefits, or wherever a pie was needed.

Kate’s all-time favorite hobby though was berry picking. It didn’t matter what kind of berries; none were safe from her berry-picking hands. She passed the love of berry picking onto her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. If they went berry picking with grandma, there was a great chance that a pie was in the making. She was also a member of the Homemakers and enjoyed her get-togethers with the ladies of the club, especially the outings they went on.

Kate is survived by her children Fletcher Flansburgh of Boscobel, Fern (John) Udelhoven of Boscobel, and Fonda Dickman of Boscobel; grandchildren Jennie (Kirk) Beers, Eric Flansburgh, Amy (Doug) Heisz, Terry (Christina) Udelhoven, Katie (Chad) Swatek, and Melissa (Brad) Schlee; great-grandchildren Ryan and Kayla Beers, Lexie Flansburgh, Dylan, Dyami, and Abby Heisz; Ashton, Averie, and Andryx Udelhoven; Lily and Brody Swatek, and Breckyn and Oaklynn Schlee; siblings Ivan Byers of Stoughton, Kenneth Byers of Boscobel, Kerry (Sharon) Byers of Madison, Elenor Friedli of Stoughton, Karon (Bob) Kuykendall of Boscobel, Shirley Cornils of Sun Prairie; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Avery Flansburgh, grandchildren Blayke Beers and Christopher Udelhoven, siblings Clarence Byers, Douglas Byers, and Dorothy Bell; son-in-law Ron Dickman, along with her parents.
