Lawrence Bay Obituary

Long time Steuben resident, Lawrence T. Bay (Larry) died on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Orchard Manor in Lancaster, Wisconsin.

Lawrence was born May 10,1924, in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin to Theodore and Evelyn (Geisler) Bay.  

In 1949, Lawrence married Monica Mezera at St. John’s Catholic Church in Prairie Du Chien; eventually settling to run a dairy farm and raise a family in Citron Valley near Steuben.  

Lawrence served in the United States Navy during World War II on board the USS LST 545 Prisoner of War Ship in the Pacific. Over the years he served as a deputy sheriff for the Crawford County Sheriff’s department, worked at Christianson’s Feed Mill, Wauzeka; Milk Specialties, Boscobel; and Reynolds Construction, Boscobel.  On returning from his Navy service Lawrence purchased and learned how to play an accordion; playing for many years in local bands.          

Lawrence was a long time active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Seneca.  During their years in the dairy industry Lawrence was an active member in the Farmer’s Union and the National Farmers Organization.  He served on the board, and as President of the Steuben Cooperative Cheese Factory.  For over 50 years he was a member of Daugherty-Larsen American Legion Post 446 of Steuben.  

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Monica; nine children and 28 grandchildren, sons Ted (Kris) of Steuben (their children Andrew, Valerie, and Michelle), Mark of Boscobel, Jeff of Montgomery, AL (his children Ashley and Elly), Brad (Donna) of Boscobel (their children Dana, Lawrence, Lincoln and Luke), Tom (Susan) of Sun Prairie (their children Chad and Leah), Kevin (Dianne) of Hartland (their children Willie, Matthew, Maria, Michael, and Joseph), Lucy (Tim) Walter of Fort Atkinson (their children Jon and Ben), Patty (Tom) Okey of Cassville (their children Isaac, Isaiah, Elijah, Andrea, Ezra, and Erasmus), and Annette (Bob) Hoye of Fort Atkinson (their children Clayton, Drew, Anna, and Grace).  He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Mary Shedivy, Beth Scheckel, Pat Mezera, Sharon Mezera, Catherine Mezera and Phyllis Mezera, as well as many nieces and nephews.      

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Evelyn Bay, his brother and sister-in-law Harlan and Nels Bay; his brothers-in-law Clem, Dan, Chad, and Winnie Mezera, Harry Shedivy and Paul Scheckel.  

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 12th at Kendall Funeral Home in Boscobel, with a Rosary at 7:3o P.M..  A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, April 13th 2013 at 11:00 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Seneca.  Monsignor Roger Scheckel  and and Father  Zacharie Beya Co-officiating with burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.  Military Honors accorded  by the Daughterty-Larson  American Legion Post #446 of Steuben.
