Marie Broadbent, Fuller Obituary

Marie Alice Markin Broadbent Fuller, age 92 of Boscobel, passed away on Monday, February 21, 2022, at the University Hospital in Madison. Marie was born on February 13, 1930, in the Township of Scott in Crawford County.

She was the only child of Agnes (Radtke) and William Markin.  Marie grew up during the Great Depression outside of Blue River, WI in a place they referred to as “Give a Damn Gulch”.  Marie helped her parents milk cows, churn butter, and harvest their crops.  She often spoke about how the community came together during the Depression, trading food and working to help each other with harvests. Growing up in this way, Marie learned to be very resourceful and had a collection of life’s artifacts that she would pass on to whoever needed them. Her son used to joke that she invented recycling.

She was married on December 6, 1946, to Lyle Broadbent, and they had four children, Stuart, Phyllis, Robert, and Ava. They lived in Rockford, IL for a time while Lyle worked as an Engineer and eventually moved back to Boscobel to raise their family.  After Lyle’s death in 1957, Marie worked hard to support her family taking on various jobs at Thermogas, the Boscobel Hotel, and the local drugstore.

On May 29, 1965, she married Ora “Cory” Fuller and inherited four wonderful stepdaughters.  After her children all left for college, Marie enjoyed traveling with Corey during his career as an engineer. After his death in 1993, Marie continued living in Boscobel, WI.

She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church and attended regularly until she was not able, due to her health. Marie was an avid reader and had an impressive library collected over her lifetime. She had an open mind, a constant drive to learn, and a deep appreciation for the arts. She was self-educated on a vast range of subjects and was always up to date on current events. Her in-depth conversations will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Marie was preceded in death by her mother and father, daughters Phyllis Broadbent and Ava (Broadbent) Reynolds, sons Stuart and Robert Broadbent, son-in-law Ernie Reynolds, husbands Lyle Broadbent and Ora Fuller, and stepdaughters Judith Barbeau and Peggy Falkowski.

She is survived by daughter-in-law Sheila Broadbent of Boscobel, stepdaughters Beverly Jaeger of Birnamwood, WI and Patricia Rumble of Avon, IN, four grandchildren, Angela Broadbent of Alameda, CA, Layne Reynolds (John Pitzer) of Beaumont, TX, Lili (Clint) Fandrich of Arequipa, Peru, and Paul Broadbent of Waterloo, IA, great-grandchildren Ava Blank and Christopher Pitzer, and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, May 28, 2022. A visitation will be held from 9:00 am – 11:00 am with the service to follow at the Kendall Funeral Home (209 Mary St. Boscobel, WI).
