Paul Wesley Coon, age 67 of Boscobel, passed away peacefully surrounded by his girls on Thursday, November 21, 2024.
He was born in Anamosa, Iowa on September 3, 1957, son of the late Orville and Jean (Kutz) Coon. He moved to Wisconsin as a teenager, where he would complete high school. Paul’s high school Math teacher, who taught for over thirty years, remembered Paul as having one of the most brilliant math minds of any student he ever taught.
On September 7, 1974, Paul married the love of his life, Jill Johnson, and together they raised three daughters. People often asked Paul if he wished he had sons. He would always say, “Nope, I have my three girls.” He was driven to teach his girls an honest way of life, parenting with love and discipline. He stressed the importance of a deep work ethic and independence. Paul loved his sons-in-law, often telling them, “Thank you, good luck, and there is no return policy.”
Fishing was a much-loved pastime for Paul. Anytime he could, he was fishing. Paul and Jill spent a lot of time fishing with the girls when they were young, Paul always asking, “Did you spit on your worm?” He also loved squirrel and deer hunting. Paul and Jill hunted together for many years and when it came time, he enjoyed teaching his girls how to hunt.
In 2007 Paul fulfilled a lifelong dream and purchased a Harley. Of course it was purple, his favorite color. He once said, “As long as I can ride my Harley and take care of my girls, I don’t need anything else.”
Paul was a well-respected and talented carpenter. He was very skilled with his hands and worked in construction for many years. This started when Paul was a little boy, when he would always sleep with a hammer under his pillow. Paul worked for many construction companies over the years, including Wick Homes, Mastercraft, Connery, Encore, Connery-Fedler, and he ended his career retiring as Superintendent from Gorman Construction in 2020. Some of his projects included large apartment complexes and retirement communities. Many would ask him for his advice on their building projects and he was always willing to lend a hand.
Paul cherished his three girls whom he referred to as “his angels.” He treasured the times spent with his family, especially when he was with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened. Paul had a very funny, honest and direct way about him that his family will forever miss.
He is survived by his daughters Chasity Updike of Boscobel, Kelly (Mark Molldrem) Trumm of Boscobel, and Lindsey (Dan Bell) Rounds of Boscobel; grandchildren Nathan (Tiana) Updike, Dustin Updike, Ava Trumm, Justis Molldrem, Stewart Trumm, Jeriane Molldrem, Wesley Rounds, Owen Rounds, Gunnar Bell, and Mason Bell; great-grandchildren Asher Updike, Weston Updike, and another Baby Updike on the way. Paul’s further survived by his siblings Cathy Jacobus, Pam Brownlee, James (Rebecca Wilcox) Coon, and Pete (Karla) Coon; brother-in-law Gary (Diane) Johnson, sister-in-law Donna Johnson, dear friends Greg Johnson and James Trumm, along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Paul was preceded in death by his wife Jill Coon, his parents, parents-in-law Stuart and Lorraine Johnson, brothers-in-law Kurt Brownlee and Doug Johnson, and son-in-law Ronny White.
Paul’s family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the staff at Gundersen Boscobel Hospital and Agrace Hospice. We are deeply grateful for the compassion and dedication shown by each and every one of you.
