Richard “Rick” D. Rice, age 71 of Boscobel, passed away at home peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, December 29, 2025, still in the glow of Christmas lights, and the warmth of the cheer he so lovingly spread during his favorite season. Rick was born on November 18, 1954 in Boscobel, son of the late Douglas and Helen (Helms) Rice, and graduated from Wauzeka High School in 1972. He and Mary Marx (née Hunt) were united in marriage on July 18, 2003, and made Boscobel their home.
Before retiring, Rick managed the Surplus Liquidators in Boscobel and worked for many years for Rayovac in Fennimore. Later, he and Mary opened their home to foster children and provided respite care. An avid fisherman, Rick loved spending peaceful hours aboard his boat on the Wisconsin River.
Rick had the greatest gift of creating Christmas magic. To his family and children of all ages in his community, he was Santa Claus. He derived so much joy from donning his iconic red suit, lovingly hand-made by his “Mrs. Claus”, Mary, and greeting children at local schools, stores, and parades.
Rick is survived by his wife Mary Rice; children Raeann (Drew Steele) Bowdey, Ellie (Jim) Blair, Jane Marx, David Marx, and Rodney (Willie) Marx; grandchildren Braden and Ava Blair, sister Deb (Linda Johnson) Rice, along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Douglas and Helen Rice, sister Sandee Lindholm, and mother-in-law Kathleen Hunt.
The family would like to express our profound gratitude to Laurie Ralph of St. Croix Hospice, whose presence was such a comfort to us.
A celebration of Rick’s life will be held at a later date.
